KAWASAKI, JAPAN—Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (hereinafter, “Toshiba ESS”) today announced that it has delivered the H2RexTM pure hydrogen fuel cell system (rated output 100 kW) to the head office of U Group Company in Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture, Japan (hereinafter, “U Group”), where it will start operation.

Toshiba ESS’s pure hydrogen fuel cell system H2RexTM was installed as a fuel cell system at the “Hydro Q-BiC” at SHIMIZU CORPORATION’s (hereinafter, “SHIMIZU”) building-attached hydrogen energy utilization system, which supplies electricity to the U Group head office building. This will be the first building in Nagano Prefecture*1 to use hydrogen energy, contributing to the Net Zero Energy Building (“ZEB”) initiative.*2

H2RexTM is a more environmentally friendly pure hydrogen fuel cell that generates power and heat free of CO2 emissions, and Toshiba ESS has already delivered H2RexTM to wholesale markets, convenience stores, heated swimming pool facilities, factories, and various other applications. While Hydro Q-BiC is installed outdoors, where the temperature is expected to be below 0°C in winter, Toshiba ESS has improved the design of the H2RexTM to achieve an installation temperature of -10°C and a power generation temperature of -7°C, enabling it to be used in lower temperatures than the previous product.

SHIMIZU has been promoting the introduction of Hydro Q-BiC, which contributes to low-carbon technology. The first Hydro Q-BiC unit has been operating since July 2019 in the wholesale market in Koriyama City, and all Hydro Q-BiC units are equipped with Toshiba ESS’s H2RexTM.

Shigehiro Kawahara, Vice President of the Energy Aggregation Div. at Toshiba ESS, says, “In order to help make a carbon-neutral society a reality, Toshiba ESS aims to provide high value-added hydrogen solutions by integrating related technologies, such as renewable energy-derived hydrogen energy, by expanding our business through this collaboration.”
