KAWASAKI, JAPAN―Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (hereinafter “Toshiba ESS”) announced today that Toshiba ESS’s 100-kW pure hydrogen fuel cell system, “H2Rex™” was installed in a building connected to the hydrogen energy system “Hydro Q-BiC”, by Shimizu Corporation (hereinafter “Shimizu”). The system was installed in a replacement building operated by Shimizu and its Hokuriku branch in Kanazawa City, with Toshiba ESS supplying electricity using “H2Rex™” and contributing to the operation of the first hydrogen energy building in the Hokuriku area.*2

“H2Rex™”, which is a clean power generation system that does not emit CO2 during power generation, is a pure hydrogen fuel cell system. It supplies electricity and heat generated from hydrogen and the only by-product of that process is water. “H2Rex™” is supplied for lighting and other equipment in the building, and the heat generated is utilized by “Hydro Q-BiC.”

Shimizu actively promotes the introduction of “Hydro Q-BiC” which is aiming for
effective tools for decarbonizing buildings and plants. In July 2019, the first “Hydro Q-BiC” unit was installed in the wholesale market in Koriyama City, and the first unit was installed in Toshiba’s “H2Rex™”.

Yoshihisa Sanagi, General Manager of the Hydrogen Energy Business Division at Toshiba ESS, said, “We have delivered more than 120 ‘H2Rex™’ units for various applications, such as wholesale markets, convenience stores, dairy farmers and warm water pool facilities, and will also enhance our business promotion for buildings and plants.”

Toshiba ESS will continue to provide hydrogen solutions which enable efficient use of energy in various applications and will contribute to the realization of a carbon-free and hydrogen society.

*1 ZEB: “Net Zero Energy Building” which is type of building that aims to reduce its annual primary energy consumption to zero while providing a comfortable indoor environment.
*2 In Fukui, Ishikawa and Toyama Prefectures, according to research by Toshiba ESS as of May 2021.
