KAWASAKI, JAPAN―Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (hereinafter “Toshiba ESS”) announce today that Toshiba Hydro Power (Hangzhou) Co., Ltd. (THPC), a Chinese subsidiary that manufactures, sells and maintains hydroelectric equipment, has won a major order to supply four 30MW bulb hydroelectric generator units and its accessory equipment to the Hubei Xinji Hydropower Plant from Datang Xiangyang Hydropower Co., Ltd.in China. Delivery of the equipment will begin in from April 2021.

Datang Xiangyang Hydropower Co., Ltd. is the hydroelectric subsidiary of HANJIANG GUOTOU GROUP CO., LTD. in charge of development of the Xinji Hydropower Plant. THPC will deliver hydroelectric equipment for the Hubei Xinji Hydropower Plant, which the Datang Xiangyang Hydropower Company is set to build along the Han River, a tributary of the Yangtze. The deal is worth several billion yen.

In 1894, Toshiba Group delivered the first Japanese-made 60kW hydroelectric generator to the Keage Power Station, Japan’s first commercial hydroelectric power plant. Since then, Toshiba Group has delivered a total of over 2,300 hydro turbines worth more than 62 GW to over 40 other countries, mainly Asia.

Back in May 2020, THPC also received an order for three sets of 53MW large bulb hydroelectric generator units and its accessory equipment from Sichuan Minjiang Port and Shipping and Electricity Power Development Co., Ltd. for the Longxikou Hydro Power Station (located in the Sichuan Province). THPC will deliver the equipment in March 2021. THPC was able to secure these consecutive orders thanks to its and Toshiba ESS ’s strong technical capabilities, the high reliability of its equipment, and its good experience in delivering hydroelectric equipment to clients in China and other countries around the world.

The Chinese government announced last year that it aims to go carbon neutral by 2060. The adoption of environmentally conscious renewable energy sources is expected to continue accelerating in China due to a need to meet the electricity demand generated through urbanization and economic growth. In addition, China’s hydroelectric power generation capacity—which stood at approximately 370 GW as of the end of 2020—is expected to grow to around 470 GW by 2050. * Demand for pumped-storage power generation is growing particularly fast, as it provides the load balancing capabilities necessary to deal with the rise in renewable energy.

Toshiba Group offers an extensive lineup of hydro turbines and power generation equipment that meet various flow, head height, and output needs. Moving forward, the Group aims to expand its client base by continuing to bring high quality products to China, Southeast Asia, Africa, and other countries/regions around the world.
