ENEOS Renewable Energy Corporation (headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President and Chief Executive Officer: Kazuhiro Takeuchi; “ERE”), Buzen Toshiba Electronics Corporation (head office: Buzen City, Fukuoka; President and Representative Director: Akihiko Hirotsu; “Buzen Toshiba”), and Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (headquarters: Kawasaki City, Kanagawa; President and CEO: Taro Shimada; “Toshiba ESS”) have signed a Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (PPA)1 to supply environmental value to Buzen Toshiba.
Under this agreement, ERE will provide Toshiba ESS, acting as a renewable energy aggregator2, with renewable energy generated power and its associated environmental value (non-FIT non-fossil certificates) from solar power plants it operates in the Kyushu area, with a combined capacity of approximately 1,910 kW. Toshiba ESS will sell the procured electricity, which totals approximately 2.29 million kWh annually, on the Japan Electric Power Exchange (JEPX). In accordance with a virtual PPA3 concluded with the Toshiba Group’s Buzen Toshiba, Toshiba ESS will supply its environmental value to Buzen Toshiba. Through this agreement, Buzen Toshiba expects to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 955 t-CO2 per year.4
ERE aims to advance the adoption of renewable energy and to contribute to a decarbonized society through its renewable energy power generation business. By promoting PPAs and other initiatives, ERE will continue to actively support corporate efforts to reduce CO2 emissions and environmental impact, working toward the achievement of a sustainable society.
Buzen Toshiba is a manufacturing group company affiliated with Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation that operates the Toshiba Group's semiconductor and storage products (HDD) businesses. In line with the carbon neutrality vision set by the Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Group, Buzen Toshiba is working to achieve a 100% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions at its manufacturing sites by FY2030, including through the purchase of carbon credits. By incorporating this newly introduced corporate PPA alongside other measures, Buzen Toshiba will continue to pursue the optimal mix of renewable energy.
Toshiba ESS will continue to contribute to the realization of a stable and efficient power system that utilizes renewable energy through its renewable energy aggregation business. By combining digital technologies with the expertise it has accumulated as an energy equipment manufacturer, Toshiba ESS will continue to provide high value-added services that contribute to the realization of a carbon-neutral society.
- A Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) is a long-term contract under which a company purchases electricity generated from renewable energy sources from a power producer.
- An aggregator is a business that aggregates distributed energy resources, including renewable energy and storage batteries, to supply electricity. This type of business is recognized as a category under Japan’s Electricity Business Act.
- A Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (Virtual PPA) is a contract in which a company and a power producer transact only the environmental value of renewable energy, such as non-fossil fuel certificates, without physically transferring the electricity.
- Calculated using Kyushu Electric Power Company’s FY2023 emission factor of 0.417 kg-CO2 per kWh.
