Transit Scheduling Systems Optimize Operations
No. 4: Base Depot Work Schedule And Inspection / Vehicle Assignment

Safety and punctuality of train operations have been supported by transit scheduling developed from the expertise built up since the birth of railways. Among transit scheduling functions, this article will take up base depot work schedulering, inspection planing, and trainset rostering.

Safety and punctuality are supported by precise planning behind the scenes

Passengers always focus on the train operations that happen between the stations. However, beyond that, the base depot work schedule and the vehicle rostering are also important. With proper schedule of them, this means smooth dispatching, vehicles can operate corresponding to the timetable.

Due to capacity of the depot, number of tracks for storage and maintenance of vehicles are limited. Without good allocation, the smooth flow of the vehicles cannot be achieved and it could lead to many more conflicts on the tracks. Therefore, linking vehicle allocation to the timetable will ensure smooth vehicle dispatching.

For these reasons, the base depot work schedule is created as another function apart from base timetable function in order to have efficient shunting and be able to manage the maintenance efficiently. Here, in depot work schedule, it is mainly focusing on the pull in and pull out of the vehicle to eliminate those inefficient shuntings such as track conflicts with multiple vehicles shunting on the same track in the same time.

Inspection plan has certain relationship with the depot work schedule. For safety and punctuality in transit scheduling, the periodic maintenance has to be scheduled based on rule of each maintenance types such as a vehicle that exceeds the upper limit of traveled distance or number of operated days in service.

To avoid negative impact on vehicle operation based on timetable, vehicles should be scheduled to take inspections in rotational manner, besides it is needed to consider depot resources such as depot workers and facilities.

In this article, the importance of inspection and dispatching of vehicles are explained. It can be concluded from blog #6 through #9 in order to provide passengers a good transit service. In other words, it requires the integration of transit scheduling system with functionality of running profile, timetableling and resource scheduling such as crew and vehicle scheduling.
