Hybrid Locomotives
Clean, environmentally-friendly locomotives with reduced exhaust gas, noise and fuel consumption
Using high performance lithium-ion batteries as the main source of motive power, Toshiba delivered yard-track shunting locomotives capable of hybrid operation with a small engine to Japan Freight Railway Company. This hybrid locomotive realizes a maximum tractive effort of 20 tf, a maximum wheel tread output of 500 kW and a maximum operation speed of 45 km/h (110 km/h when out of service).
Features
The locomotive contains large capacity high-performance batteries the output alone of which can provide a haul load of 1300 t, enabling the size of the engine to be reduced. A PMSM is used as the motor, aiming at higher efficiency. From the structural aspect, a modular concept has been employed for improved ease of maintenance and workability, and also to enable higher performance storage batteries to be readily installed in the future.
