Toshiba Corporation
Around the world, there are off-grid regions where power grids have not been developed, and the people living there cannot use adequate lighting or electricity for work, cooking, or studying. Toshiba Group has focused on an electricity sharing service that utilizes renewable energy, and since 2019, we have been conducting needs assessments and feasibility studies targeting Pacific Island nations.
After confirming the needs and demand from residents for a sharing service in Malampa Province in the Republic of Vanuatu, and recognizing its potential for economic viability, we conducted a trial of the service in the region in 2023. This trial, which started with a sharing service for LED lanterns, was carried out with the cooperation of the Malampa Provincial Government, the Vanuatu Foreign Investment Promotion Agency, and the Pacific Islands Centre. This initiative, known as the “Delighting Everyone Project” (DEP), is now being advanced toward commercialization in collaboration with partner companies and organizations. In the future, the project plans to expand beyond providing electricity and lighting via LED lanterns to also include renting out electric products that can revitalize local industries, such as electric farming tools and sewing machines.
Furthermore, on March 14, 2025, Toshiba Group won an award for the DEP initiative in the “Service Design Concept” category in the Professional Concept discipline at the iF Design Award 2025, an internationally prestigious design award organized by iF International Forum Design. The project earned this award for its effective approach to solving the challenges of off-grid regions, its sustainability, and its social benefits.
By accelerating the commercialization of electric product sharing services and promoting the electrification of communities in an environmentally conscious manner, Toshiba Group will contribute to providing affordable and clean energy for all, while also improving their quality of life.
