Reducing paper usage with Smart Receipt®

Toshiba Tec Corporation

Developed and operated by Toshiba Tec Corporation, with operational support from Toshiba Data Corporation, the Smart Receipt® electronic receipt service which is offered within Japan digitizes itemized receipts that would normally be provided as paper receipts at the time of purchase, and manages and delivers the data via an electronic receipt center. Customers can use their smartphones to check their purchase history at any time without needing to hold on to paper receipts, which improves shopping convenience while helping participating stores to reduce receipt issuance costs and to cut down on paper resource use.

In FY2024, the Smart Receipt® service issued approximately 75 million electronic receipts. If these had been issued as paper receipts, at an average length of 16 cm per receipt, the total length would have reached about 12,000 km*—roughly the distance from Tokyo to Miami, Florida, USA (about 12,016 km).
