Toshiba Environmental Solutions Corporation
The Act on Promotion of Resource Circulation for Plastics came into effect in Japan in April 2022, emphasizing the promotion of initiatives to achieve a circular economy. In February 2025, the Act Concerning Sophistication of Recycling Business, etc. to Promote Resource Circulation also came into effect, requiring that contributions to carbon neutrality be taken into account during resource recycling.
Toshiba Environmental Solutions Corporation is engaged in the home appliance recycling business, and in October 2024, it began operating a new washing machine processing line that incorporates advanced sorting facilities, improving the recycling rate (Fig. 1). Unlike conventional lines, this line integrates pre-processing, shredding, and sorting to separate washing machines into metals (e.g., iron and aluminum) and various plastics. By recycling plastics on this line, the greenhouse gas emissions generated during the production of recycled plastic materials can be reduced compared to production of virgin plastic materials, which also contributes to achieving carbon neutrality.
