Toshiba to Establish DX Business Design Project Team

KAWASAKI, Japan — On January 1, 2019, Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (hereinafter referred to as Toshiba ESS) established the “DX Business Design Project Team” as a dedicated organization for accelerating digital solution business to conduct activities across the business units.
“As a manufacturer, we have deep knowledge and experience of maintenance and services which would give us an advantage in digital transformation of energy business.” noted Fumio Otani, Corporate Senior Vice President, who is responsible for the DX business of Toshiba ESS. “We aim to create a new business that is oriented to resolving customer’s issues and that is performance based.”

1. Background of establishing a new organization and its role

In the energy industry, the need for digital solutions are growing to cope with increasing use of fluctuating renewable energy and to improve operational efficiency. To meet this need and create new business opportunities, Toshiba ESS actively promotes digital-related business.
To accelerate its initiative, it established a new organization to advance its digital solution capabilities by integrating all of its digital resources and concentrate on it.

As DX solutions, Toshiba ESS has developed failure predictions, performance monitoring of equipment at power plants and substations using IoT and AI technology based on our manufacturing knowledge and service that it has developed over the years. It also promotes more efficient maintenance and service of equipment using AR (augmented reality) and VR (virtual reality), as well as a stable power supply using energy management systems to effectively use renewable energy.
In addition to the market survey and marketing activities for digital-related business, the new organization will actively participate in the development of reference architecture which Toshiba group aim to make it an international standard, and make new business models based on co-creation with customers.

2. Positioning of new organization in the Toshiba Group

Toshiba Group aims to become one of the world’s leading Cyber-Physical Systems (“CPS”) technology companies. CPS creates value by collecting data from the physical world, recognizing and analyzing them with digital technology, and giving feedback to the physical world.
Toshiba is strengthening digital-related business throughout the group and establishing a new organization as part of this movement.
Last April, Toshiba Corporation established the "Digital Transformation Strategy Acceleration Division," which oversees Toshiba Group's entire DX business. The DX Business Design Project Team is collaborating with this division.
Toshiba ESS will promote digital business by utilizing technical resources, such as operation/optimization know-how of customer-side systems using developed manufacturing knowledge accumulated over many years of business experience.
