Toshiba Group Revises the Breakdown of Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Target by FY2030
~To achieve carbon neutralization of Scope 1 and Scope 2 by FY2030~

June 27, 2023

As part of Toshiba Group's sustainability management strategy towards carbon neutrality, we have revised the breakdown of our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction target by FY2030. The reduction target of GHG emissions generated from Toshiba Group business activities (Scope1, Scope2) in FY2030 has been changed from 70% to 100%.

As the effects of climate change have intensified, companies are being encouraged to respond proactively with the growing interest of society and the increasing demands of business partners. Toshiba Group aims to realize carbon neutrality and circular economy through digitalization as top management policy. We also specify "Response to Climate Change" as a priority item in Environmental Future Vision 2050 and aim to achieve carbon neutrality throughout Toshiba Group's entire value chain by FY2050. As a milestone, we aim to reduce GHG emissions by 70% by FY2030 compared to the FY2019 level. To further promote our activities, we have now revised the breakdown as follows in terms of "scope," "speed," and "quality".

  • 100% reduction*1 of emissions generated from Toshiba Group business activities by FY2030:(from the FY2019 level)
  • 70% reduction*2 of emissions generated from Toshiba Group's entire value chain such as raw material procurement, distribution, sales, disposal, etc. by FY2030:(from the FY2019 level)

【Key points】

<Scope>
We expand the scope of initiatives to include not only Scope 2 (use of electricity and heat) but also Scope 1 (use of fuels and process gases). In addition, the reduction target of Scope 3 was changed from reduction of Category 11 (use of sold products) only to overall Scope 3.

<Speed>
Toward the carbon neutrality in our entire value chain, we aim to realize carbon neutrality in Scope 1 and Scope 2 by FY2030.

<Quality>
 We expand measures to encourage the installation of renewable energy generation facilities in society.

To achieve this new target, we promote "Response to Climate Change" by not only reducing energy and fuel consumption in the production processes in Japan and abroad and promoting the introduction of energy-efficient processes, facilities and renewable energy by applying Internal Carbon Pricing (ICP) *3, but also providing energy decarbonization technologies and the reduction of power consumption in use-phase of products and services we develop. In addition, we will promote the reduction of GHG emissions derived from products and service purchased in cooperation with our suppliers and focus on the measures to adopt to climate change in the future.

Our reduction target of GHG emissions by FY2030 was approved by the Science Based Targets (SBT)*4 initiative in FY2020. However, we have submitted the revised applications to the SBT Initiative based on the new reduction target.

"Committed to People, Committed to the Future." is the long standing Basic Commitment of the Toshiba Group, we hold environmental initiatives to be one of our top priority tasks in corporate management and promote environmental activity toward aiming to realize a sustainable society.

  • Purchasing of carbon credits to offset GHG emissions of process gases etc., which are difficult to reduce GHG emissions, are incorporated into the carbon neutrality process.
    The target is set by 70% reduction if purchasing of carbon credits are excluded.
  • The promotion to reduce GHG emissions, especially in Category 11 (Use of sold products) and Category1 (Purchased goods and services), where emissions are particularly high.
  • A monetary value for carbon that is estimated internally by the company and is a mechanism to promote corporate decarbonization investments. For details, please see

  • Science Based Targets are scientifically grounded GHG reduction targets set by companies on a medium- to long-term basis in order to restrain the global average temperature increase this century well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5°C. Science-based targets are validated by the SBT initiative. Toshiba Group's target approved is our FY2030 target set before the revision of the Environmental Future Vision 2050 (before November 2021).
