Substation Automation System GSC1000

Product Overview

Toshiba pioneered the development of numerical substation automation technology during the 1980s and has since built a wealth of experience in supplying systems for application at all voltage levels including UHV substations. GSC1000 is today's state-of-the-art system and all of the main components have been certified by DNV-GL to demonstrate compliance with the IEC 61850 standard for substation communications. GSC1000 is configured in a bay oriented and distributed system architecture, its components are modular and facilitate easy upgrading to the latest device models.

Typical system configurations and an overview of the main components are shown below.

The station computer GSU100 is a substation server device, this platform is used to support control and monitoring functions, a remote control centre interface function, data recording function and other functions as required by the individual project. Moreover, as the station computer is a critical device, it uses similar hardware to that used for industrial applications, with the emphasis on reliability.

The remote control centre interface function can be provided in the gateway device, which is independent from the station computer, as shown in the diagram above. The gateway device uses the same hardware as the station computer.

Station computer application software suitable for use on a general-purpose PC is also available.

The operator workstation is the HMI device and is used to perform control and monitoring operations for the entire substation. Because this workstation is sometimes operated in a halt condition during remote operation from a control centre, for example during unmanned operation, general-purpose PC level components are often used in conjunction with the MS Windows operating system.

The bay control unit (BCU) GBU200 is a multifunction control and monitoring platform equipped to perform control and monitoring functions at the bay level. BCUs are provided for each bay and can be mounted in either the switchgear local control panels or in a control cubicle in either a relay room or control room. The BCU typically provides control and monitoring functions, performs measurement calculations, undertakes event processing and transmits data e.g. events, measurements etc. The BCU executes control processing in response to commands from the operator workstation or remote control centre under normal operational conditions. It is also provided with an LCD having a system display function; local control from the BCU is also supported.

Furthermore, units wherein protection functions are implemented within the BCU, called a BCPU, (bay control and protection unit) are also available.

The station bus is an intra-substation LAN compliant with the IEC 61850 standard and is used for establishing connection with the various IEDs. With the application of RSTP, (Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol, IEEE 802.1w), a LAN that uses a ring-type of configuration is generally more favourable in terms of total cable length and redundancy than a star configured LAN and hence the ring-type configured LAN is in more widespread use.

Redundant configuration of the station bus with the adoption of PRP, (Parallel Redundancy Protocol, IEC 62439-3), can also be provided.

Contact signals and non-IEC 61850 communicating devices are often still used in substation protection and control systems. To facilitate connection to this type of equipment, a dedicated Interface Unit (IFU) can be supplied in the form of a GBU200 device so that the GSC1000 is able to integrate mechanical type devices and non-IEC 61850 compliant IEDs
