Toshiba Corporation (President and CEO, Satoshi Tsunakawa, hereinafter “Toshiba”) and Dharma Capital. K.K. (Founder and CEO, Akiyoshi Shiotani, hereinafter “Dharma Capital”) will launch a joint project to verify the effectiveness of high frequency trading (hereinafter “HFT”) strategies for the Japanese listed stocks based on optimal solutions presented by a quasi-quantum computer, Toshiba’s Simulated Bifurcation Machine™. This is the world's first attempt to verify the effectiveness of quasi-quantum computers when they are applied to the HFT strategies in actual financial trading systems.

TOKYO – Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) has developed the world’s most efficient electrocatalyst technology for converting carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide, a raw material for fuel and chemicals. The electrocatalyst has an installation area about the size of a C5 envelope, operates at room temperature, and can process up to a ton of CO2 a year. This dramatic improvement in processing speed and conversion rate was achieved with a proprietary technology for stacking CO2 electrocatalyst electrodes.

TOKYO – Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502), the industry leader in solutions for large-scale optimization problems, today announced a scale-out technology that minimizes hardware limitations, an evolution of its optimization computer, the Simulation Bifurcation Machine (SBM), that supports continued increases in computing speed and scale. Toshiba expects the new SBM to be a game changer for real-world problems that require large-scale, high-speed and low-latency, such as simultaneous financial transactions involving large numbers of stock, and complex control of multiple robots. The research results were published in Nature Electronics on March 1.

The new algorithms will be applied to finding solutions to highly complex problems in areas as diverse as portfolio management, drug development and logistics management.

TOKYO―Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) has developed inspection information management AI for equipment inspections that can recognize the location as well as any signs of deterioration in equipment, including the size of any crack, simply by analyzing a single photo taken with a general-purpose camera. The system combines two Toshiba technologies: position-recognition AI that identifies locations from images, and 3D-recognition AI that accurately estimates sizes. The new AI will contribute to the efficiency of maintenance inspections at power plants and other facilities with weak or no GPS signals.

The tests will commence in December 2020.

TOKYO―Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) has improved detection accuracy for public data by almost 10% over conventional methods (from 69.5% to 79.1%), achieving world-best detection performance in AI for anomaly detection using images of products at manufacturing sites. The company’s proprietary deep-learning methods allow highly accurate learning from only normal data, eliminating the need for anomaly data that can be difficult to collect at manufacturing sites. Anomalies are detected with high accuracy even when the appearance of the inspection target differs by imaged location or product type (Fig. 1). This AI will help automate quality control inspection of semiconductor wafers, which is conventionally performed visually, and will contribute to improved productivity at manufacturing sites.

Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation ,Toshiba Corporation, Toyo Engineering Corporation, Idemitsu Kosan Co.,Ltd. , All Nippon Airways Co., Ltd. and Japan CCS Co., Ltd. have reached an agreement to begin reviewing recycling business models for reuse of CO2 from sources such as exhaust gases into Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) via Power-to-Chemicals (P2C) processes, using technologies developed by Toshiba Corporate Research & Development Center which convert carbon dioxide (CO2) to carbon monoxide (CO) through electrolysis.

TOKYO―Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) has developed AI that accurately estimates regions of randomly piled individual objects in images taken with standard, visible-light cameras. Logistics robots integrating the AI perform highly accurate unloading and picking, and in tests against a public-data set the AI recorded the world’s best performance in respect of low measurement errors. Because it uses images from a standard camera, the AI has a much shorter learning process than AI based on three-dimensional sensors. It also delivers easy implementation without any onsite pre-installation learning.

Tokyo, Sendai, Sayo—Using synchrotron radiation at SPring-8, large-scale synchrotron radiation facility, Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502), the Japan Synchrotron Radiation Research Institute (JASRI), and Tohoku University have succeeded in imaging the magnetization dynamics of a hard disk drive (HDD) write head for the first time ever, with a precision of one ten-billionth of a second. The method makes possible highly precise analysis of write head operations, and will accelerate the development of the next-generation write head and further increase in HDD capacity.

Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502), Tohoku University Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization (ToMMo) and Tohoku University Hospital have demonstrated that quantum cryptographic communications technology can provide genomic medicine with a safe, completely secure data management environment. This was achieved by (1) developing a system which applies quantum cryptographic communications technology to clinical sequencing, and (2) using that system to safely transmit cancer genome analysis data (exome sequence data), via online expert panel attended by physicians and other experts to analyze the sequenced data (Figure 1). This is the world's first development and demonstration of a system using quantum cryptographic communication technology in the field of genomic medicine.
