SCiB™ has been adopted by Damen Shipyards Group N.V. for the electric ferry

SCiB™ is used as the power source for the electric ferry which is designed and built by Damen Shipyards Group N.V. (Damen Ferry 2306E3). The battery system has acquired the DNV-GL standard of the ship certification body, which means not only reduces pollution due to exhaust gas and fuel cost of ships but also it has been evaluated as a highly reliable battery system.

Hybrid propulsion ship

Utashima, a steel freight ship, is Japan’s first hybrid freight coaster using lithium-ion batteries.
During normal cruising, lithium-ion batteries are charged with the electricity generated by the main engine in the high-efficiency region. When the ship needs to run for a short distance, for example, in a port, it turns off the main engine and runs on battery energy, thereby contributing to the realization of zero-carbon ports.
* Owned by Mukaishima Dock and operated by NS United Naiko Kaiun Kaisha, Ltd.

SCiB™ Adopted for a Marine Hybrid System

The marine hybrid system developed by the Marine Business Division of Toyota Motor Corporation has adopted the Toshiba rechargeable lithium-ion battery SCiB™ 2P12S module “Type1-23.”
This system has been installed on Selene, Japan’s first hybrid sightseeing vessel, which is currently in commercial operation.
Selene is operated by Ipponmatsu Shipping Co., Ltd, providing environmentally friendly and comfortable cruising services in Osaka.
By combining a conventional diesel engine with an electric motor, the hybrid system ensures high operational reliability while enabling electric-only navigation.
This results in significantly reduced emissions, improved fuel efficiency, and lower noise levels during operation.
The SCiB™ Type1-23 module offers excellent safety, long cycle life, and high reliability—key requirements for marine vessel applications.
Its stable output characteristics support dependable onboard power supply, contributing to smooth and efficient vessel operation.
In March 2025, the Type1-23 battery module and battery components obtained approval for marine vessel use under steel ship rules from ClassNK (Nippon Kaiji Kyokai), further demonstrating their suitability and reliability for marine applications.
