Solutions for Product Traceability in Biotechnology and Genome Era
ARAI Yoji / MINEZAKI Koichi / ISOZAKI Ichiro
Various medical products have been introduced in the fields of medicine and medical instruments making full use of the latest developments in biotechnology and genome science. It is predicted that in the near future, individual medicines will be available based on the human genome that will work only for a particular patient. While the efficacy of such medicines will be highly valued, ensuring their quality and safety from the perspective of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection via blood products will be a major issue. Strengthening safety measures for medicines as they pass into other hands is therefore an important problem.

Japan's present legal framework also needs to be reviewed in terms of approval and permission systems to assure conformity with other countries. Due to a revision of the Pharmaceutical Affairs Law in 2002, all institutions and industries in the medical field in Japan must maintain complete records on when, where, and to whom their products are transferred or administered, with reference to the lot number.

Toshiba Solutions Corp. has introduced newly developed traceability solutions to several advanced enterprises. These solutions satisfy the legal requirements while causing the least possible interference with existing monitoring systems.

By applying MDA to a real system development and comparing the machine-made design with a hand-made design, we have identified the effect of MDA in enabling uniform and automated application of expert knowledge of software design.

Okinawa Naha Airport Doppler Radar for Airport Weather
ISHIZAWA Hiroshi / MUTO Ryuichi
Weather radar today is not simply a radar for rainfall mapping, but a multifunctional tool to answer a variety of customer needs not confined to meteorological purposes.

Toshiba has supplied a Doppler Radar for Airport Weather to Naha Airport in Okinawa as the latest multifunctional weather radar. The major objective of the radar is not only to observe airport weather, but also to detect low-level wind shear near the airport to ensure safe takeoff and landing of aircraft. The features of the radar include enhanced wind-velocity detection capability to observe Okinawa's typhoon-class winds, as well as eco-conscious consideration of the suppression of spurious radiation from the transmitter to realize a product that is gentle to the environment.
