Toshiba Group is poised to improve quality of life and water security for the people of the Caribbean nation of Trinidad and Tobago, following the award of five major contracts for the upgrade, rehabilitation and construction of water treatment plants.

The contracts have been given to Toshiba Water Solutions America Inc. (TWSA),  a wholly owned by Toshiba Water Solutions (TWS), the Indian-based subsidiary of Toshiba Infrastructure Systems & Solutions Corporation (TISS), and the scope of work covers the construction of a new treatment plant, the upgrade of one plant and the refurbishment and rehabilitation of three plants.

Located at the edge of the Caribbean basin, just off Venezuela and on the shoulder of South America, the island country of Trinidad and Tobago is promoting a comprehensive National Water Sector Transformation Program that will upgrade and modernize its water facilities and deliver efficient, sustainable and resilient supply of potable water and help to secure water security. The program is overseen by the government's Water and Sewerage Authority, funded by the Inter-American Development Bank, with project management handled by the National Insurance Property Development Company Limited (NIPDEC).
NIPDEC selected TWSA to handle five projects that will contribute to achievement of the National Water Sector Transformation Program's goals. TWSA started to do business in the Caribbean in 2001. In the years since, the company has built a solid record of achievement and understanding of the region and its needs by constructing 39 water supply and sewage treatment facilities, and by providing plant operation and maintenance management services. Its track record in handling all aspects of engineering, procurement and construction (EPC), and in plant operation and management (O&M), were key factors in its selection for the Trinidad and Tobago projects.

On Tobago, TWSA will design and construct the Goldsborough Water Treatment Plant. On the larger island of Trinidad it will carry out four projects: upgrade the Guanapo Water Treatment Plant in Tunapuna Piarco, refurbish the Chatham Water Treatment Plant in Siparia, and rehabilitate the Freeport and Navet Water Treatment Plants in Couva Tabaquite Talparo.

While Trinidad and Tobago is rich in natural water resources, its current water infrastructure is aging, and shortages in certain regions during dry periods are a concern. The country must also respond to immediate demands. The population continues to grow and has now passed 1.5 million, and the government must ensure that people have reliable access to safe water and sanitation facilities, goal six of the Strategic Development Goals. It must also deliver the facilities needed to support continued economic growth in the oil and gas and financial sectors, the mainstay of the economy, and to carry out its strategy of promoting sustainable tourism. The infrastructure delivered by TWSA will contribute to achieving all of these targets.

TISS is working closely with TWS and TWSA to expand its business in India, and also in Central and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and North and Central America. With a primary focus on EPC and O&M business for public water supply and sewage plants and industrial water treatment facilities, the companies will continue to contribute to the global realization of sustainable water recycling systems and the achievement of potable water for people everywhere.
