Toshiba, A Clear Industry Leader in Patents of Oxide Anode for Lithium-ion Battery

2017.02.16

Toshiba Corporation's (Tokyo: 6502) groundbreaking work on the anode of lithium-ion batteries has won the company clear leadership in comprehensive patent strength in both Japan and the US. That's the conclusion reached by Japan's Patent Result Co., Ltd., a Japanese patent analyst, in a survey that declares Toshiba to be the clear leader over industry rivals, with over three times the comprehensive patent strength of its nearest competitor. Patent Results has carried out the same technology survey twice now, in 2010 and 2016, and Toshiba took the laurels both times. The most notable thing this year was a bigger lead over other companies

Mass production of SCiB™*, Toshiba's innovative lithium-ion rechargeable battery, began in March 2008. Since then, the rechargeable battery's excellent characteristics, including safe operation, long life and rapid charging, have won it a wide range of applications in the automotive, railway, industrial and stationary fields.

The key to the SCiB's excellent performance is the lithium titanium oxide (LTO) used in its anode, the battery's negative electrode. Carbon-based materials still dominate in lithium-ion anodes, but Toshiba started to research the potential of LTO way back in 2000, and has recorded its progress in patent applications for important technologies.

Safe, long-life lithium-ion rechargeable batteries are becoming increasingly important in our daily lives, as they find more uses. Toshiba will continue to promote SCiB R&D that realizes safe, secure and efficient use of energy.
