Toshiba Ranks No. 1 Worldwide in Strength of Patents
for Key Lithium-ion Battery Technology

-Top rankings in Japan, the United States, Europe and China demonstrate competitive advantage of core technologies supporting SCiB™-

September 17, 2026

Kawasaki, Japan-Toshiba Corporation has ranked No. 1 in a global assessment of overall patent strength for oxide-based negative electrode technologies for lithium-ion rechargeable batteries. The findings are from Patent Result Co., Ltd., a Japanese patent analytics company, and are the results of a survey of patent impact covering Japan, the United States, Europe, and China.

Toshiba has demonstrated consistent industry leadership in this essential technology, including ranking first*1 in Patent Result’s similar 2022 survey covering Japan, the United States, and Europe. This latest survey added China and ranked Toshiba No. 1 in the global assessment covering all four regions. Toshiba also ranked No. 1 in each of the four regional assessments, demonstrating the strong competitiveness of its oxide anode technologies in major global markets.

The analysis found that Toshiba holds highly influential patents in all the surveyed territories and at the global level. The survey found that Toshiba holds 733 active patents across the four regions, which is almost three times as many as the second-ranked company, while at the global level its overall Patent Score*2 was almost twice that of its nearest competitor. These results demonstrate the strength of Toshiba's patents in both quality and quantity.

Toshiba has conducted research and development into oxide-based negative electrode technologies since before 2000, and brought its first breakthrough to market in 2008: the SCiB™, a lithium-ion rechargeable battery with a lithium titanium oxide anode.

The technology underpins the outstanding performance of SCiB™ and Toshiba has long led the way in this core technology. The company has ranked No. 1 in comprehensive rankings of patent strength for oxide anode battery technology conducted by Patent Result in 2010, 2016, 2022 and 2026. For Toshiba, the results are confirmation by an independent third party of the superiority, over many years, of the technology at the heart of the SCiB™.
The SCiB™’s outstanding safety, long service life, and rapid charging and discharging performance have won it an enviable reputation and wide application. Variants of the battery have been adopted in hybrid electric passenger cars, electric buses and other commercial vehicles, railways, marine vessels, power and energy systems and in industrial equipment, such as automated guided vehicles. Recent years have seen it taking on the crucial role of grid balancing for power supply systems. As a key technology supporting electrification and decarbonization across diverse sectors, SCiB™ continues to demonstrate its versatility and value.

Toshiba will continue to advance research and development of SCiB™, and to pursue patent recognition and protection for its foundational oxide-based negative electrode technology as it contributes to electrification and decarbonization in a broad range of industries.

  • The survey is based on Patent Score, a proprietary metric developed by Patent Result Co., Ltd. Patent Score is an index that standardizes the level of attention a patent receives using a deviation-value methodology. It is calculated primarily from patent prosecution history and other records generated during the examination process. Patents that attract greater attention from the market receive higher scores, reflecting their recognition and influence.
