Tokyo and Kawasaki --- Toshiba Group is strengthening its capabilities in the data center business with a dedicated organization that will coordinate the Group’s diverse data-center-related businesses and expand the scope of its current business. This will allow the Group to deliver one-stop solutions across the entire value chain, from data center planning, through to design, procurement, construction, efficient operation and XaaS (anything as a service).
Until now, the Group has primarily focused on providing power supply equipment, but it will expand scope of its services, including construction work to respond to the wide-ranging needs of companies in the data center business.
Advances in digitization and the rapid uptake of generative AI are driving construction of data centers, and data center power consumption is rising significantly. Meeting this demand while promoting carbon neutrality can only be achieved by utilizing decarbonized energy sources such as renewable energy, introducing environmentally-conscious equipment, and bringing highly efficient energy management to data center operation.
On May 1, Toshiba Corporation established the “Data Center Business Promotion Department.” The new organization centralizes the Group’s planning, sales and engineering functions for the data center business and provides a single point of contact for one-stop solutions for data centers. The company will increase the new department’s staffing and resources.
Alongside this, to reinforce construction work for data centers, Toshiba Plant Systems & Services Corporation, a Toshiba Group company that offers comprehensive engineering and construction, and that operates global-level integrated operations in facility planning, engineering, procurement, construction and services, will establish a “Data Center Infrastructure Promotion Office,” on July 1, 2025.
Spearheaded by the Data Center Business Promotion Department, related business units and companies across Toshiba Group will reinforce cooperation as they work to strengthen Toshiba Group’s data center business.
Toshiba Group sees opportunities for medium- to long-term growth in the data center business and is quickly taking steps to respond to market needs, provide solutions that meet demand for data center construction, and to support increased power consumption while contributing to achieving carbon neutrality.
Key points in strengthening the data-center business
- Toshiba Plant Systems & Services Corporation’s ability to provide comprehensive engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) services supports it in providing equipment for data centers, and in flexibly procuring products within and outside Toshiba Group. It will also proactively respond to shortages of engineers and other construction resources by promoting collaborations with partner companies inside and outside the Group.
- The ability to combine different data center products from individual Group businesses allows Toshiba to bring lower energy consumption and higher added value to already operational and new data centers. Examples include utilizing surplus energy from uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) built on Toshiba’s SCiB™ rechargeable batteries and integrated into a virtual power plant (VPP) to adjust energy supply and demand fluctuations; and applying Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation’s TOSHIBA SPINEX for Energy in efficient energy management systems. Combining Toshiba Group’s products and services provides solutions that keep the advance to carbon neutrality in mind.
- Renewable energy aggregation services that use storage batteries can leverage Toshiba’s unique technologies for forecasting energy demand, generation and pricing, and for optimal trading, and can support long and stable renewable energy procurement aligned with data center energy demand curves. Management of storage batteries and of fluctuations in wind and solar power generation realize power supply that imposes fewer burdens on the grid.
- Strong relations with electric utilities and companies in the renewable energy business, which Toshiba Group has provided with power generation and transmission and distribution equipment, plus a track record in supplying HDD to data center hyper scalers, enables Toshiba Group to assist companies in the sector in constructing and operating data centers that reflect the needs of data center operators and users alike.
- Toshiba Group will investigate a new end-to-end service for modular and unit data centers that extends from design and manufacture to construction and maintenance.
- Provision of XaaS, anything as a service, centered on data linkage between data centers, will increase added value to data centers.
