Toshiba Launches 60GB 2.5-inch HDD with World's Fastest Rotational Speed 31 July, 2002 2.5-inch, 9.5mm drive in mass production
Tokyo--Toshiba Corporation, continuing to provide users of personal computers with industry-defining data storage, today announced the world's first 60GB, 2.5-inch hard disk drive with a disk rotational speed of 5,400rpm. The new drive also builds on Toshiba's tradition of slim HDD and is only 9.5mm high. At the heart of the new high-speed drive is the combination of a newly developed high performance hard disk controller and a new head and disk medium. The former supports very high-speed rotation while the latter two achieve stable read and write operation at the boosted rate of rotation. The regularity of disk rotation is assured by fluid dynamic bearing (FDB) motor that realizes both fast performance and low noise, while the drive's faster rate of data throughput is supported by increasing its buffer memory to 16MB. The new HDD also realize an areal density of 49.8 gigabits per square inch and the high reliability of 7,840m/s2 (800G) non-operating shock. High-capacity, high performance HDDs are essential for new generations of portable and space-saving personal equipment. Toshiba is the pioneer in small form-factor HDD, and its range of 2.5-inch HDD offers technical excellence and cutting-end performance, backed up by a rugged design and reliability. The new drive announced today is suitable for high-end portable PCs and desktop PCs. The new drive continues Toshiba's moves to reinforce respect for the environment and reduce environmental loads through use of lead-free soldering and halogen-free PCB. Mass production of the new HDD will begin in September. Main Specifications
