Company Leads HDD Advances for 21st Century Mobile Products

Tokyo--Toshiba Corporation today announced that it has brought the world's highest platter capacity to a new lineup of super-slim 2.5-inch hard disk drives. The new drives offer users of portable information equipment an areal density of 35.1gigabits per square inch, equivalent to 20 GB per platter, the highest areal density of any HDD available in the market.

Toshiba announced four new drives: Ball-bearing (BB) motors drive of the 40GB/20GB and fluid dynamic bearing (FDB) motors drive of 40GB/20GB. All of the HDD have the rugged design and reliability essential for portable PCs--they can withstand up to 800G of non-operating shock--while their high capacities also suits them for incorporation in AV products.

Toshiba is the industry pioneer in the small form-factor HDD essential for bringing high data storage capacities to the fast evolving market for portable personal equipment. The company's wide range of 2.5-inch HDD combine cutting-edge technical excellence with high levels of performance and the lineup announced today will give portable PCs capacity enough for the most demanding operating systems, applications and files, including large video sources.

Mass production of the new products will begin in July.
