Toshiba Introduces 3.3-gigabyte 2.5-inch HDD The Industry's Largest Storage Capacity

15 October, 1996

TOKYO-- Toshiba Corporation today announced the development of two 2.5- inch small-size hard disk drives which achieve the industry's largest storage capacities for their form factors. With a height of 19mm, the MK3303MAN's 3.3- gigabyte storage capacity makes it the industry's largest-capacity drive in its class. The slim-type 12.7mm MK2103MAV has a storage capacity of 2.16 gigabytes, a larger capacity than any other drive of the same height on the market. Shipment of samples of both drives starts today in Japan, samples will be made available at 120,000 yen for MK3303MAN and 80,000 yen for MK2103MAN.

As the performance of personal computers soars, the amount of data to be processed is also soaring. The advent of multimedia demands huge data storage capacity for still images, voice, and moving pictures. Furthermore, users want notebook PCs that provide functionality and performance comparable to desktop machines. Consequently, there is an urgent need for HDDs for notebook PCs which can offer a storage capacity equivalent to that of with drives installed in desktop PCs.

Main features

    MK3303MAN
    1. With a height of 19mm, weight of 220g and storage capacity of 3.3 gigabytes, the drive is eminently suitable for a wide range of data-intensive multimedia applications, where image and voice data are taking center stage and creating a need for big storage capacity. It will help propel the performance of notebook PCs to new heights.

    2. A disk rotation speed of 4,852rpm, data transfer rate of 16.6MB/second, and a large-capacity 128KB buffer memory offer high-speed access at an average seek time of 13 milliseconds.

    3. Meets ATA-3, the global standard for connecting PCs and HDD.

    MK2103MAV

    1. Slim 12.7mm height and a weight of just 155g, coupled with a big 2.16 gigabyte storage capacity, make the MK2103MAV an outstanding solution to the pressing data-storage needs of multimedia notebook PC users, and idea for subnotebook PCs.

    2. A disk rotation speed of 4,200rpm, data transfer rate of 16.6MB/second, and large-capacity 128KB buffer memory offer high-speed access at a average seek time of 13 milliseconds.

    3. Meets ATA-3, the global standard for connecting PCs and HDD.
