New Toshiba Plant Starts Operation in Philippines Manufacturing Base for Advanced Information Equipment 30 September, 1996 TOKYO -- Toshiba Corporation today announced that Toshiba Information Equipment (Philippines), Inc, (TIP), its wholly-owned information equipment manufacturing subsidiary, will start production in Philippines on October 1. TIP was established in July 1995, to meet rapidly growing demand for information equipment. The company's state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, completed earlier this month at Laguna Technopark in suburbarn Manila, will manufacture hard disk drives, optical disc drives, and motherboards, printed circuit boards for PCs that incorporate the main processor and other key devices. Initially, to ramp up production, 830 people will be employed at the new factory, and the head count is expected to rise to 2,200 in 1998 as production capacity increases. Fiscal year 1997 production capacities will be 3.4 million 2.5-inch HDD, 6.2 million optical disc drives and 400,000 motherboards. By 1998, capacity will rise to 4 million HDD, 6.5 million optical disc drives, and 700,000 motherboards. While initial production of optical disc drives will concentrate on CD-ROM drives, TIP will also be a key facility for mass-production of DVD-ROM drives, the next-generation, high-density storage medium for personal computers. As a result, TIP's manufacturing capabilities will extend beyond current mainstream peripherals to include cutting-edge products for multimedia. TIP is also expected to play an important role in reinforcing Toshiba's price competitiveness in HDD and optical disc drives. Working in cooperation with Toshiba's procurement operations in Singapore and elsewhere in Asia, the company will undertake localized design and production and seek to reduce costs by using components sourced in Asia.
