Toshiba's New 8-time Rotational Speed CD-ROM Drive with SCSI Interface 12 June, 1996
The CD-ROM drive market is enjoying considerable growth, and is expected to grow some 30% to over 40 million units worldwide in FY 1996. The market trend is for high rotational speed models, including 8-time drives. In response, Toshiba has already introduced an 8-time rotational speed drive with AT Attachment Packet interface (ATAPI) that is suitable for incorporation in IBM compatible PCs. The introduction of a new 8-time drive with SCSI interface further reinforces the Toshiba line-up. The new drive, XM-5601B, achieves a fast average random seek time of 130 milliseconds and a random access time of only 145 milliseconds. This high level of performance results from accelerating operation of the digital signal processor used for digital servo control, improved error correction capabilities, and an improved pick-up head and motor designed for high speed data access. The result is reliable data reads even at 8-time rotational speed. XM-5601B also incorporates Toshiba's proven performance-improving digital servo system and variable speed playback, which starts to read data before the disc speed reaches any standard rotational rate. The power-saving capabilities of these technologies give the XM-5601B an average power consumption of only 4.3W. Shipment of XM-5601B will start from July 1996. Samples are priced at 60,000 yen in Japan.
