Toshiba Introduces New GSM Telephone to European Market

TOKYO -- Toshiba Corporation today announced that it will introduce its first handheld cellular telephone for the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) standard in the middle of this year, initially to the European market. The new telephone, TCP-6000, is only 125cc in volume, weighs-in at 135g, and extremely slim at only 17 mm thick with GSMs first integrated antenna.

The TCP-6000 will be exhibited at CeBIT '96 from March 14 (Thu.) to 20 (Wed.) in Hannover, Germany.

Since its launch in Europe in 1992, GSM has fast gained acceptance as a global standard for digital mobile communications. Already in use in over 80 countries throughout Europe, Asia-Pacific, the Middle-East and Africa, GSM-based systems now have over 10 million subscribers -- a number expected to exceed 50 million worldwide by as soon as 2000.

TCP-6000 was co-developed by Toshiba and Hagenuk Telecom GmbH, Germany, under a joint development agreement signed in April, 1994. Manufacturing of the phone will be undertaken by Hagenuk at its Kiel facility in Germany.

Extensive co-development work has succeeded in developing a truly user-friendly telephone incorporating a number of unique features:

  1. TCP-6000 is the first GSM telephone with an integrated antenna. This has been achieved while assuring performance that matches that of extendable antenna.

  2. The phone's ergonomic S-shaped profile fits comfortably against the ear and in the palm.

  3. Built in guides to functions and features allow manual-free operation right from the beginning, and even allow users to define their own personal menu structure.

Mr. Takao Kishida, general manager of Toshiba's Mobile Communications Division, commented, "I'm pleased to add TCP-6000 to our product line at this time. GSM systems are becoming increasingly popular, and we can respond to that with the best phone on the market. I'm sure TCP-6000 will strengthen our mobile communications business".

Toshiba is a major player in the mobile telephone business. The company supplies AMPS phones to the North American and South-east Asian markets, and analog TACS phones and digital PDC phones to the Japanese market. With the introduction of its new GSM phone to the European market, the company will assure its worldwide presence in all major mobile telephone markets.
