Toshiba Digital Solutions Corporation

KAWASAKI―Toshiba Digital Solutions Corporation (Toshiba) today announced the general availability of GridDB® 5.7 Enterprise Edition (GridDB® 5.7 EE), a purpose-built database for IoT and Big Data workloads. The latest version features improved recovery capabilities for servers and network equipment failures in IoT systems managing petabytes of data, as well as ensuring system stability during complex analytical processing.

Additionally, starting today, a new version of GridDB® cloud-managed service, GridDB® Cloud (GridDB® Cloud 2.5) is available. GridDB® Cloud is ideal for users looking to swiftly establish a robust data infrastructure at the heart of their IoT systems. GridDB® Cloud 2.5 has enhanced its service lineup with a new plan that costs in the 80,000 yen range per month.

These two GridDB® products are designed to meet the diverse needs of companies driving digital transformation, accommodating both large-scale and small-scale systems.

GridDB® Overview and Features

GridDB® is a scalable NoSQL database management system (DBMS) developed by Toshiba, optimized for processing time-series data, particularly in IoT applications. It serves as the foundational data infrastructure supporting the Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) promoted by ToshibaGroup and has been successfully implemented across diverse fields, including manufacturing and energy.

GridDB® features are as follows.

  • Time-Series Data Oriented: Optimized for efficient real-time processing of high-frequency, large-scale time-series data, facilitating accurate recording and analysis.
  • High Processing Power: Capable of handling vast amounts of data, ensuring rapid processing speeds.
  • Reliability and Flexible Scalability: Offers high reliability and flexible scalability, guaranteeing continuous operation even during failures or when adding servers.
  • Ease of Development: Features both NoSQL and SQL interfaces, allowing for quick and efficient database operations while leveraging existing SQL knowledge.

GridDB® has three product lineups.

  • GridDB® Enterprise Edition: The commercial version of GridDB® software, designed to run on-premises or in a user-prepared cloud environment.
  • GridDB® Cloud: A managed service operated in the cloud by Toshiba, provided as Database as a Service (DBaaS).
  • GridDB® Community Edition: The open-source version of GridDB® software, downloaded hundreds of thousands of times globally.

Overview of GridDB® Enterprise Edition and Enhanced Functions

GridDB® Enterprise Edition is designed for big data and IoT systems that demand mission-critical performance, such as those used in social infrastructure. The following functional enhancements have been implemented to further bolster system reliability and operational efficiency.

1. Enhanced Failure Response for Large-Scale Systems
In large-scale systems managing data from hundreds of terabytes to petabytes, the number of servers and network components increases significantly. When a failure occurs in any of these devices, the affected component must be disconnected, and the system restarted. Previously, this disconnection process took about one minute; however, with GridDB® 5.7 EE, this time has been reduced to approximately 20 seconds. Additionally, if a failure occurs during a database update, the recovery time has been cut to about one-fifth of what it was before. These improvements enable mission-critical systems to minimize downtime even in the event of hardware failures.

2. Enhanced System Stability During Data Analysis
In large-scale systems, intensive searches that access vast amounts of data can monopolize CPU and memory resources, leading to slowdowns in other processes. With GridDB® 5.7 EE, resource allocation has been optimized to mitigate this impact, ensuring that even during heavy search operations, the stability of the entire system is improved. This allows for smoother performance across all processes, enhancing overall efficiency.

3. Enhanced Python Support
GridDB® 5.7 EE now supports the Python standard DBAPI2, a widely recognized API for database access in the Python programming language. This enhancement allows users to seamlessly utilize the SQL interface within Python, simplifying development and expanding integration possibilities.

Overview of GridDB® Cloud and Strengthened Service Lineup

GridDB® Cloud delivers GridDB® as a managed service in the cloud, making it an ideal solution for companies seeking quick implementation and cost-effective operations, as well as scalable data management.

To accommodate businesses starting small, GridDB® Cloud offers a "Free Plan" as an entry-level data infrastructure. With the launch of GridDB® Cloud 2.5, Toshiba is introducing the "Shared" plan, designed for companies transitioning from the "Free Plan" to meet increased business demands and data volume. This new offering complements Toshiba’s existing "Standard," "Professional," and "Enterprise" plans, enabling organizations to build a data infrastructure that aligns with their growth and scale.
