KAWASAKI―Toshiba Digital Solutions Corporation (Toshiba) today announced the general availability of GridDB® 5.5 Enterprise Edition (GridDB® 5.5 EE), a purpose-built database for IoT and Big Data workloads. Enhanced features have been incorporated in this version to facilitate and streamline software development and operations essential for the practical implementation of the Internet of Things (IoT). This will contribute to the further promotion of the widespread adoption of IoT.

In recent years, the utilization of IoT in business has advanced rapidly, with a growing emphasis on leveraging IoT data to improve operational efficiency and enhance the value offered to customers. Software development and operations play a crucial role in realizing the full potential of IoT. However, there is a shortage of skilled personnel with the necessary capabilities. Even if human resources can be secured, the associated costs remain a significant consideration.

Therefore, new features have been implemented in GridDB® 5.5 EE to facilitate software development for analyzing IoT data, as well as to streamline operations once it is in operation.

Main feature enhancements of GridDB® 5.5 Enterprise Edition are as follows:

  1. SQL Cost-Based Optimization
To analyze vast amounts of data, it is essential to extract the required data efficiently. However, in conventional methods, there is variability in the time it takes to extract data due to programming techniques, and in some cases, it may be necessary to reprogram. This feature identifies various methods for extracting multiple data sets, predicts the time required for each, and efficiently extracts the data using the optimal method. This makes it possible to extract data efficiently, regardless of programming technique.
    [Use Case]
    -      Maintaining fast data extraction without the need to review data extraction programs even if the volume of IoT data increases over time after deployment.

  2. Automatic Time-Series Data Aggregation
The aggregation and calculation of metrics such as average, maximum, and deviation at regular intervals, which were previously performed on-demand during data analysis, can now be automated by registering them using an ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) tool, which performs data extraction, transformation, and loading. This significantly reduces the effort and time required for data analysis. The ETL tools that can be used with this function include ASTERIA Warp by Asteria Corporation and the open source Talend.
    [Use Case]
    -      When analyzing daily data, there is no need to wait for the program that aggregates the previous day's data to finish execution before obtaining results. Data is automatically aggregated in the background on a regular basis, which significantly reduces waiting time.

The following is an endorsement message from Asteria Corporation (translated from Japanese).

Asteria warmly welcomes the release of GridDB® 5.5 Enterprise Edition and the commencement of the provision of the automatic time-series data aggregation feature utilizing ASTERIA Warp.

In today's environment where the demand for data utilization is increasing, the swift and accurate collection of scattered data both internally and externally, particularly IoT data, and its transformation into an analyzable format have become crucial. ASTERIA Warp, with its rich set of over 100 adapters, enables rapid no-code data integration across various systems and currently supports the digital transformation (DX) of over 10,000 companies.

By automating the time-series data automatic aggregation feature of GridDB® with ASTERIA Warp, we are confident that we can significantly reduce the workload during data analysis, further accelerating our customers' business efficiency and DX initiatives.

We look forward to continuing our collaboration with Toshiba Digital Solutions to contribute to the advancement of our customers' DX initiatives and the development of IoT.
